2013 - A Year In Review ... For Battle Rap

January 1, 2014, 1:47 am

This year has seen some of the most controversial, dynamic and exciting moments in the history of battle rap.  Youtube subscription service based leagues were launched (and folded), Charlie Clips went SUPER ham, “bars” were finally heralded over “names,” Hollow returned from incarceration to battle Tsu Surf, Dizaster spit in Eurghs face and Arsonal un-CRIPified Charron just as fast as Daylyt made him one.

2013 was also the year of the bloggers: Jay Blac, Jon Rines, Angry Fan, Laura Tarsi, Dana, Mr. 250, War Room Sports, RapGrid, Queenzflip, Vladtv, TheSource.com (Jon Reiss), TOBattleblog, Unbias Review, RMBVA, OTBVA, Battlefix & more all held it down and made great contributions to the battle culture.

From the many entertaining battles and moments surrounding this culture over the past 365 (give or take) days, RapGrid has put together the dopest commentary you can read on battle rap in celebration of the new year; forget all of the politically correct lists catering to the most popular emcees and companies - THIS IS THE REAL.

*Note: This list includes videos ranging from dates 12/12 - 12/13*

TOP 10 BATTLES

10. Anubis vs HA Double - URL Proving Grounds

The Scoop: As the “big stage” seemingly took a turn for the worse, “Bars Over Names” became a huge slogan fans adopted to help emcees with smaller names shine above some of their peers.  These two definitely set the lyrical bar for newcomers to big leagues.

Standout Line: “You doin’ all you can do like Ryu, cause don’t all Ken do is moves like Ryu?” - HA Double

9. Danja Zone vs NuBorn - Black Ice Cartel

The Scoop: In of of the years best displays of pure lyrical talent, Nu Born seemed to resurrect himself from the ashes of obscurity that he was thrust into after a lackluster battle with Sco.  This only added to the growing stock of Danja Zone, who became a force in 2013, as he fully took advantage of all opportunities placed in front of him.

Standout Line: “The machine gun Kelly, that mac Miller - they both spit like they supposed to be black but they not” - Danja Zone

8. Rum Nitty vs Danny Myers - King Of The Dot

The Scoop: Once in a while a battle comes out of no where that makes you say, “Hold on ... WHAT THE FUCK DID HE JUST SAY?!?!?!”  The energy was through the roof, the punchlines were crazy, and the crowd was nuts.  Best part?  No one saw it coming.

Standout Line: “I’ll chop you into so many pieces your funeral will be on a conveyer belt” - Danny Myers

7. Arsonal vs DNA - Dont Flop

The Scoop: Main events are very tricky, as they can go one of two ways: a.) live up to the hype b.) suck terribly and waste everyone’s time/money.  This battle may have seemed out of place to some, as both rappers are from the North East (US), but the Don’t Flop crowd assured every moment of this match would have you on the edge of your seat, as they were electric.  Arsonal and DNA both showed why fans fell in love with their energetic styles years ago.

Standout Line: “She gave me disability that’s why I do shit so well, so if she’s retarded that might explain why I spit so well”

6. Gattas vs Bonnie Godiva - King Of The Dot

The Scoop: The first female battle in KOTD history was an instant classic - so anticipated that Drake himself went to great lengths to ensure that it went down.  These two girls set a very high standard for women in one of the greatest battle moments of 2013.

Standout Line: “I’ll Blazer with 22 Rockets ... now Bonnie is Clyde” - Gattas

5. Shuffle T vs Marlo - Dont Flop

The Scoop: Dont Flop does a great job of theming matches, and this was definitely no exception to the rule as this “Bad Bars” battle ironically had some of the best bars of the year.  Throw some gun fingers up for London *brrrap*

Standout Line: “Im great ... no wall of China” - Marlo

4. Lotta Zay vs Syahboy - URL

The Scoop: Inspired by Loaded Lux’s famous “battle on the roof ...” line, URL decided to throw a small group of battles on a roof and release the footage in black and white.  If the interesting new look mixed with the great back-and-forth wasn’t enough, Lotta Zay ended the battle with one of the best lines in a history - a remix of Syahboy’s most famous line: Wiz Khalifa (Wiz Could-Leave-Ya.)

Standout Line: “When that ratchet blow your wiz could leave ya with her wig on the side missing like Amber Rose” - Lotta Zay

3. DNA vs Charron - King Of The Dot

The Scoop: After Shotgun Suge pulled a no-show at World Domination 4, DNA stepped up to the plate a took a last-minute battle against Charron in what would be one of the most talked about battles of 2013.  Perfectly timed freestyles, crazy rebuttals and a hype crowd not only made this a classic battle, but it took us back to the glory days of the sport where emcees would seamlessly integrate well prepared material with spur-of-the-moment observations that could swing the momentum of a close battle.  Only 8 days prep ...

Standout Line: “I’m here to put DNA in someone else’s box like artificial insemination” - Charron

2. Bigg K vs Illmaculate - King Of The Dot

The Scoop: Illmaculate proved why he is a legend and Bigg K earned his status among battle rap’s elite in this epic clash of styles.  The only words that can do this video justice are the ones spit by both emcees.  Just watch.

Standout Line: “I’m bipolar - nice jab ... mean hook”

1. Conceited vs Tsu Surf - URL

The Scoop: SMACK/URL’s Armageddon event was shut down without warning and many fans were left with none of the main events they came from around the world to see ... that is until Poison Pen made a few calles to End of the Weak and saved one battle: Conceited vs Tsu Surf.  Due to the circumstances, everyone wanted a classic and that is exactly what they got.  Any time two of the most popular battle rappers in the world perform at top notch level, its a treat.  Arguably the best performance to date from both of artists.

Standout Line: “I don’t need a boogie board for me to body Surf”

iBATTLE FALLOUT EVENT RECAP

November 26, 2013, 5:11 pm

by Aztech

This was the first iBattle event I've attended in person, so i wasn't fully sure of what to expect, I've obviously seen a lot of they're battles online..but we all know live events is a whole different monster. When I walked in there was definitely good vibes, Uno Lavoz was in the building along with a few other familiar faces. Being an event made up of mostly undercard battles, it was definitely a real dope night. The card was mainly the first round of iBattle's 16 man up and comers tournament. There were also two Main Event battles and two Money Fights, which means almost every battle was judged on the entire card, something i think we all miss.

Tommy Gunn vs Jeffrey

First battle of the night, also the first battle of the tournament. Crowd wasn't fully awake yet which I think took some of the energy away from the battle, little bit of a style clash which isn't a bad thing.

Grade: B

Winner: Tommy Gunn 2-1

Ju Davil vs Kinetik

This was possibly my favorite battle from the tournament, both MC's were on point with real clean performances. Ju Davil definitely had the more intricate style, but Kinetik's rounds were all straight at the throat. Both had quotables, but I personally think Kinetik's performance was just too strong, by far the best I've ever seen from him(Boston bias aside).

Grade: A

Winner: Kinetik 3-0

Theo Manchild vs 3sk

Another definite style clash, this one I think might have confused the crowd a little bit. Personal opinion, one was just way more direct than the other, and I think that's what swayed the decision. Brings me to the point of when battle MC's just come with random verses and say nothing about their opponent directly..its a battle!

Grade: B+

Winner: 3sk 3-0

Ghost vs Eclipse Da God

This one was VERY dope. Another favorite of tournament, Ghost has a cool style that I think if he polished more, he could be a real problem. Eclipse was full of no nonsense bars, which took it for him.

Grade: B+

Winner: Eclipse Da God 2-1

Q Da General & Suspense vs Ju Davil & Young Skills

Battle of the night hands down. Extremely heated, wasn't very familiar with these cats but I'll definitely be checking for all of them now. There was $3200 on the line which brought the heat up like crazy. Definitely the closest battle of the night, to the point where if one team didn't have a minor slip up in the second, it would have been almost impossible to call.

Grade: A+

Winner: Q Da General & Suspense 2-1

J Vik vs Dnarro

I actually ended up guest hosting this one, another battle that fans would label "Bars vs Jokes."(which by the way doesn't make any sense, I'll explain some other time, but if you're an actual MC you already know what I'm talking about.) Battle was cool, it was really hard to match the energy of the 2 on 2 which happened right before, but both cats had good showings, $400 on the line for this one.

Grade: B-

Winner: J Vik 2-1

Gwitty vs Bishop White

This battle was cool, Gwitty had a few stumbles which ultimately cost him the battle. Bishop White definitely had the crowd on his side in this one.

Grade: B-

Winner: Bishop White 2-1

Kevin Vann vs D22

By this time of the night, the crowd was getting pretty tired and restless, and were probably waiting for the main events to pop off. This battle was cool, in my opinion definitely had a clear winner.

Grade C+

Winner: D22 3-0

Young Steady vs. Stretch Millz

Main Event, dope battle. Young Steady had the crowd on his side, unfortunatley i think a slip up cost him the battle. This was i think the only battle of the night besides the tryouts that weren't judged.

Grade: B-

My Winner: Stretch Millz 2-1

All in all definitely a dope event, big ups to Logic and GodAwful for having me come through. In my opinion I think iBattle is filling that void that GT left, which I feel alot of heads are looking for, big shouts to iBattle!

Rap Grid 1-on-1 | Looney Divine

November 4, 2013, 2:14 pm

Before Queen of the Ring tries to expand their brand to the west coast, they tested the waters by bringing the wonderful Looney Divine to get some love only the way the east coast could show her and that is by battling Star Smilez.  I caught up with Looney a couple of days before their battle dropped on YouTube.

Jon Rines – You don’t look Looney to me? I get Divine but Looney? Where’d you get that name from emma to loon?

Looney – I was always called Loon!  It wasn’t really to be specific to someone, we’d always be like ‘whateva loca’ but as we started getting older, some of us started getting more crazier than others hmmmm (laugh)

Jon Rines – hmmmm!!! I wonder who? (laugh)

Looney – (laugh) Everybody started calling me Loon then one of my homeboys called Profile, he was like ‘ Looney, you’re also Divine, like beyond everything!’ like he’d pull me away from people.

Jon Rines – Negro wanted imitates Martin Lawrence’ voice DAT ASS! I mean he was on it! You gotta get the cute ones when they’re young and don’t know they cute. That was my M.O.!

Looney – (laugh) I wasn’t as nice as I probably started becoming cause when I was younger I was very impulsive. I would do whatever and go at it.

Jon Rines – You was smashin left and right wasn’t you?! Man I was on the wrong coast!

Looney (laugh)

Jon Rines – Like, give me an example of something impulsive you did?

Looney – Well, okay. One thing I did a lot. If my friends would never fight a group of people… Like, a lot of my fights weren’t my fights. Cause if my friend gets nervous , what do you call it?

Jon Rines – I don’t know? Nigga need to man up?

Looney  - (laugh) Like I would just run out and sock the girl (laugh) I’d sock the girl you’d supposed to fight, then her home girl would run up and hit my girl then pretty much ya know. I would just start shit, not because I wanted to start shit, but because they were gonna do it but they didn’t know how so I would get it crackin and running around laughing. I don’t know. I was the Mexican girl at school that didn’t speak any English and I don’t know I was jus WILD! (laughs)

She got into her fast talking mode and I literally couldn’t keep up.

Jon Rines – You just went into one of your battle rap speed rounds yo! (laughs) But you remind me of me in a way. I cared so much about my friends, like I’d fight to take up for them before I would myself. About me I’d let it slide, but with them I was hot headed.

Looney – I’m very protective! Very loyal to who I have a bond with.

Hope she’s single then.

Looney- (continued) Like even if my friends bring people around I’ve never met, those are the people I defend. I’m not saying I go around looking for fights but if something happens it’s whatever.

Jon Rines – Where are you from?

Looney – I was born and raised in northern California, but I’d say I grew up in Nevada in Reno

Jon Rines – And where did the rapping start

Looney – I’ve always written, I’d say around 12 and I’m 21 now.

SHE’S LEGAL!

Jon Rines – First battle?

Looney – well, I’d battle homeboys around my neighborhood and a couple of girls. It started off with tracks. Like they’d make tracks about me and I’d make tracks about them.

Jon Rines – Well who did you say your rounds to? Like everyone has a person they say their rounds to before the battle…

Looney – No one.

Jon Rines – What? NO ONE!

Looney - I lost a lot of contact with people. The last 2 years have been so different. New place , new environment so I’m not close with my friends anymore and a lot of people got taken away from me.

Jon Rines – You meant like taken away!

Looney – Yeah, I’ve had homeboys deported, locked up, shot and killed.  So I keep writing to myself.

Jon Rines – Wow. So just you.

Looney – I mean I said it to my boyfriend, but he doesn’t really…. I mean you can say it to people but they don’t know what the fuck you’re saying! They don’t listen to battle rap. So they’ll say it was dope, but whatever. They don’t know.  When I used to rap with some of my friends. They were dope so it made me want to be dope, but when I moved out here you rap with people, but they way they freestyle is wack as fuck. Half don’t know about rap. I feel bad asking people to listen to my verse.

Jon Rines – But you got Jon now.

Looney – JON! You may try to set me up! You probably tell every girl you interview that. What if I get set up in some Queen of the Ring drama or somethin’

I do tell every girl though.

Jon Rines – You think I would set you up, Looney?

Looney – I don’t know! (laugh)

Jon Rines – We’ll see.  Do you know how much that Vlad interview helped you out? You gained hella fans off that.

Looney – I honestly don’t like that Vlad interview because I feel I made myself a target. It’s hard for me to be dishonest sometimes. If someone is nice to me then I’m nice to them. If they be mean, I start getting rambunctious and shit.

Jon Rines – But what’s wrong with that?

Looney – Put yourself in my shoes, Jon. These people are looking at you like Awww. They give you sympathy.  They’re like, “Okay, she doesn’t think she’s better than us so it’s okay” You wanna be friends with the nice people, but you don’t want to be friends with someone that you see as a threat to you.

At this point, a picture of O’fficial comes to mind.

Jon Rines – Did you look down and read the comments?

Looney – I mean, I try to read comments. I read some comments on my battle and I’m like fuck this. Some are cool but some are unnecessary.

Jon Rines – I just laugh. It doesn’t bother me at all.  So let’s go back to this preparation.  So you get the call from Debo to battle Star Smilez and what happened.

Looney – You know what. Some people told me about this Queen of the Ring a year ago, but I didn’t pay it much attention and barely watch the battles. Then one day I decided to watch and I see this Star Smilez girl and I’m thinking ‘Yo this bitch is wacky yo!’  Then a year later my wack ass lose to the bitch! (laughs)

Jon Rines – Your “ass” isn’t wack though. It’s perfectly shaped…

Looney – Huh?

Jon Rines – Nah, but um…

Looney – But I can’t believe I lost to her knowing I am better than her. I meant what I had said about she’s not fuckin with me but I feel bad I set that to myself but couldn’t prove it to myself. I didn’t wanna battle her. I wasn’t inspired but I should have since I was the first girl from westcoast and Debo believed in me.

Jon Rines – How did you feel about the battle with Gattas?

Looney – I feel like that was the beginning of my losing streak, SHIT! I lost. Gattas is good. I feel she was more seasoned and she was my third battle. I was still running around in Reno. I didn’t care.  I knew how to rap to my standard. The average little Latin girl down the street.  She did good! In a way she taught me a lesson.

Jon Rines – When you won your battles, you won from your aggression and insults. I think the kind of crowd you were in loved that.  Do you think it hinders you from making more clever bars since you win in crowds that don’t’ look for that.

Looney – No I don’t think so. Cause they like that shit too.

Jon Rines – I mean, I think if I took you and raised you up over here, you’d rap differently.

Looney – Well ,yeah. East coast when it comes to the rhymes they like to think more ,but over here we like more gutter hyphie movement shit.

Jon Rines – So what did you think of 40 versus Bonnie.

Looney – I love how 40 spits. She’s really lyrical. But I feel like it just wasn’t Bonnie’s night. It wasn’t like she’s horrible. Maybe life was saying ‘Don’t get your head too high up Bonnie’ you never know.

Jon – I was kinda distracted that battle because 40’s ass was so small. (laugh)

Looney – I ain’t gone lie I was watching 40’s ass the whole time! And I don’t do that! I mean even while Bonnie was rapping I was watching 40!

Jon Rines – Well I wasn’t turned on at all? (laughs) Debo gave me pictures of you to use for this interview so I was looking at you as 40 and Bonnie played in my ear.

Looney – Shut the hell up! (laughs) I didn’t even know 40 had ass like that!

Jon Rines – When I interview people there ass grows!

Looney – Wait? You interviewed her after the battle.

Awkward Silence.

Jon Rines – So you’re in Queen of the Ring now so who’s next?

Looney – I want a Hispanic chick!

Jon Rines – Like who?

Looney – Dutchess!

Jon Rines – I think you gotta control your own destiny so this interview is the start of you versus Dutchess.  If Dutchess reads this, what do you want to say to her.

Looney – Why the long face?

We both laugh!

Looney – who did you say would win between me and Star? I know you said she’d 3-0 me!

Jon Rines – I said I’m team Looney and you’d win 2-1!

Looney – Did you really say that?

Jon Rines – No, I said she’d 3-0 you.

Looney – Why?

Jon Rines – Because I thought the crowd wouldn’t mess with you, you’d come with aggression and personals and Queen of the Ring won’t like personals unless you can flip them into schemes are hot Bars.

Looney – They actually gave me love! And trust me, I’m taking this serious and working on my flaws.

Jon Rines – Yeah I hear you. Heard you did good. Okay, so my famous last question.  Tell me why shouldn’t I have you in my top five?

Looney –  NOT?

Jon Rines – Yo, I’ve asked every person I’ve interviewed this question.

Looney – Choking.  But that’s a good question, I see why you ask that.

Jon Rines – Well you’ll be okay with that and your new dedication to it so I look forward to seeing you in the future.

KOTD BATTLE OF THE BAY 6 EVENT RECAP

October 16, 2013, 7:38 pm

All of these battles can be seen now at kotdtv.com

When the card for BOTB6 was first announced, the battle community knew we would be up for some classics, as KOTD would be bringing the big battle tradition back to Oakland with both very familiar and new faces.  We have prepared this recap of the epic event to help fans re-live some of the most electrifying moments of Battle of the Bay 6.  Shoutout to the KOTD staff for providing RapGrid with Pay Per View passes, watching the stream gave us a chance to be a little more detailed with our reviews.

SIDE NOTES

- We have prepared a review for a few Day 1 battles & all of Day 2

- KOTD had mostly two minute and ninety second rounds (with the exception of the one round Head Ice vs Daylyt Battle)

- Watching the PPV stream has allowed us to include more quotes, yay for you

- The line of the battle is notated by red text under the standout lines section (some battles have more than one)

- After Dizaster vs Aye Verb, the crowd became restless and didn’t give the last three battles proper reaction

BATTLES

Rum Nitty vs Danny Myers

Prediction: Rum Nitty 3-0

This battle was such a slugfest - what an unexpected surprise.  Not only the best battle of day 1, but one of the best battles of the entire event.  With the proper push this could become KOTD’s Chilla Jones vs JC.  There’s not much to say ... the energy was through the roof and this was a classic from beginning to finish.

Standout Lines

“My case was like child support ... bust once and paid for it 18 years” - Myers

“Ill have a battler shaking on cam like Jaz the Rapper” - Nitty (ref. to Jaz’s twerk video)

“A lima bean in a time machine - ill make you a vegetable in the future” - Myers

“Big ratchet squeezin out the whip like Raspusha ass” - Nitty

“Ill cut you into so many pieces, you funeral will be on a conveyer belt” - Myers

“5:30 am you’ll see the K while you yawning / you’ll dread being woke up this way (Sway) In The Morning” - Nitty

"Dan act like roids in his system, but ill still give him the blues brother" - Nitty

Final Grade: A+

Bar for bar, these are some of the most original and dope lines I’ve heard in a while

My Winner: Nitty 2-1 ... Most will call this a draw

Cadalack Ron vs ZM

Prediction: *Blank Stare*

Cadalack and ZM are both very on and off.  Cadalack’s jokes, shock value-filled punchlines and edgy content can either be very captivating or relatively dry at times, therefore it is hard to predict when battle fans will take to one of his performances.  ZM was at his peak when Grind Time first took off, and performs on a very high level when faced with competition like Soul Khan, but has a hard time consistently beasting opponents with top notch performances.  Cadalack had a lot of crazy jokes and “wow” moments, while ZM was consistent and delivered a very lyrical round 3.  The battle was capped off by Cadalack saying some crazy lines about ZM’s girlfriend and late grandmother.

Standout Lines

“You ain’t Tailor Gang, you Cheese Wiz Khalifah and them fat clothes is tailored strange” - Caddy

“Before there was a URL you smoked SMACK and ICE” - ZM

“Ron’s girl pussy remind me of Philly ... it get a lot of brotherly love” - ZM

“Step in my cell and i’ll split him like mitosis” - Caddy

“You an undercover twerker - every time you sneeze your booty claps” - Caddy

"I can’t let the hero win (heroin) i gotta go out like a goon / u tryna get cut now? so you don’t need a lil bitch thats lighter to spoon" - ZM

Final Grade: B-

The battle had its entertaining moments, but it could be very awkward at times

My Winner: I might have leaned towards Caddy because he was entertaining at times, but ZM had some dope bars ... I don’t know you just have to see this one.

Chilla Jones vs The Deadman

Prediction: Debatable Classic - Might have even had Deadman pulling off an upset

We all know Chilla Jones is the scheme king - a lyrical beast.  Both him and Deadman have been putting in work on their respective coasts over the past year by stringing together a streak of impressive performance with classic lines.  I saw this as a match that could steal the show.  This is my favorite Chilla performance - he really shined in the shorter two minute rounds.  Deadman had dope moments, but he seemed to have a lot less haymakers than usual.  I was hoping he would match some of his recent past performances.

Standout Lines

"You came here to battle Shakespeare, but I don't play write" - Chilla

"Your girl let Con fuck, gave QP neck and throat / last i heard Heart beatin like a stethoscope" - Chilla

"Put so much money on they dome they think im Jerry ... Jones" - Deadman

"Your bars shaky hold your horses you aint stable" - Chilla

"ill blast and split his house in half - that's how I do Plex (duplex) / you told me he was slammin in the ring ... I should sue Plex (suplex)" - Chilla

"if Kobe get 50 he's a great scorer / Rondo can get 50 ... he plays for 8 quarters" - Deadman (on Chilla's ass long rounds)

"swag of a navigation app you give the worst sex / fuckin hoes like '600 strokes turn left'" - Deadman

Final Grade: A-

Dope back and forth, but Chilla seemed to have the upperhand the entire battle

My Winner: Chilla Jones 2-1

KG The Poet vs Lotta Zay

Prediction: Lotta Zay 2-1

A very dope battle that really forced listeners to think and appreciate both emcees’ pen game.  Both battled Daylyt in two of the best battles of the year, so I knew this would be a barfest.  The battle was fire on both sides, but KG just seemed to be on another level this night.  I would love to see KG throw a little more personality into his bars - his style would be nearly perfect.

Standout Lines

“Put on that white face but the soul's black like Krondon" - Lotta (Strong Arm Steady ref.)

"if i split ya front you'll see cheeks with puff like J-Lo's prime" - KG

"this shit will have a crack head off the wall like Humpty Dumpty" - KG

"when im masked up ill take control of ya city like Bane / bang and have u talking through your stomach like Krang" - Lotta

"ill fuck her in the ass so hard, she can't sit down like a guest on the Steve Wilkos show" - Lotta

"if u say you pay tons u just middle manning, you know ... Copper, Peyton, Eli ... middle Manning" - KG

"ya bitch wants this singa long - got my balls bouncin' wit every word" - Lotta

Final Grade: B+

KG elevated to a level we all knew he was capable of years ago and captured the crowd

My Winner: KG The Poet 3-0, dont get it twisted Lotta Zay was dope too

John John Da Don vs The Saurus

Prediction: John John 2-1

90% of the time John John Da Don is fire.  As The Saurus’ career has progressed, it seems as though he has become a little less effective as a battle rapper and is not necessarily feared anymore.  Both came with some heat, but The Saurus turned it up a notch and really got busy - I saw flashes of the old Saurus all through this battle, but with an updated style.  He rebuttaled at the beginning of every round ... 2/3 of them were bodybag lines.  I was pleasantly surprised.

Standout Lines

“why am i giving you the shot if you the vet” - John John

“you bout to get your light skineded life ended” - Saurus

“(ill)mac wont be affected by your death you’re like steve jobs” - John John

“every round is softer than a cinnabon, said u got that friar tucked - you ain’t even robbin hoods a lil jon” - Saurus

“he took bar recycling and made it a trend / even his own name ... he like “John” wooooo i need to say it again!” - Saurus

“he such a biter the only beverage type he sips ... Sprite Remix” - Saurus

“that back and forth over the net? im not your tennis friend / but i can serve you wit this backhand i bet ya legs’ll wemble den (Wimbleden)” - John John

“ride in wit a wagon full of white boys like a stage coach / got a rifle and a guage close  // and i know where i can aim those / not at any one of john homes just that full house where john stay most (John Stamos)” - Saurus

Final Grade: B+

John John was his usual self, but didn’t have any bombs, while The Saurus set the stage on fire

My Winner: The Saurus 3-0 (John may have got the 3rd)

Bigg K vs Illmaculate

Prediction: Classic

This is a match where you just knew both guys would come correct.  What makes this hard to call is the various angles and styles that both were effectively using throughout the battle.  I’d hate for this to become a “street vs backpacker” argument on the comments - it will ruin the beauty of this shit.  Bigg K may be the most believable person in battle rap.  Illmac was a little more creative, but Bigg K had some very very very crazy lines.  Illmaculate’s round 3 is one of the best rounds I have ever heard from a creative standpoint: “we haven't battled yet, this all happened in your head now imagine what’s gunna happen at the actual event.”

Standout Lines

“ill lift illmac through a ceiling fan and drop money on his grill like a dental plan” - Bigg K

“u act tough when u rap stuff - play gangsta / but u really pussy, thats fake heart ... pacemaker” - Bigg K

“pay me homage - you comparing satin to satan / angel cake to pagan profits” - Illmac

“ill lift your soul through the beam like a mothership” - Bigg K

“i keep a level head in drama you seem shook/ im bipolar ... nice jab, mean hook” - Bigg K

“chrome mac 90 up in your dog teeth / this ill mac ring twice - that’s w-r-c’s” - Bigg K

“he’s so forgetful wit writtens i ain't got a line about this fool in prison / cause at least there he can actually get through a sentence” - Illmac

“u get some type a street cred cause u caught a weed charge / i will beat slob down your chest like a retard” - Bigg K

“long desert eagle hit u dead in the chest / thats how to kill a mockingbird - hit gregory peck” - Bigg K (Illmac’s name is Greg)

Final Grade: A+

This shit was just hot

My Winner: Illmaculate 2-1

Daylyt vs Head Ice

Prediction: You can’t make a prediction for a Daylyt battle anymore

This was a one round battle.  Daylyt had crazy lines and no gimmicks (he put on the mask while Ice was rapping though), while Ice was hilarious and spit some deep schemes.  This is a hard one to call because Ice rapped for about two minutes longer and went second.  Still a dope battle. Three rounds might have made it even better.

Standout Lines

“its funny how you callin me the clown but u the crusty nigga / the bitch asked me his age I told her he older (odor) than a musty nigga” - Daylyt

“you’ll get jumped out the gate ... no of(fence)” - Daylyt

“where i’m from we dot up the squares - it is everything but paradise (pair a dice)” - Daylyt

“Ill put a round in a square like a single Reeces” - Daylyt

“yall praise a nigga that got ass nekked?  Yall past reckless / i don't feel comfortable around niggas that be ass checkin” - Ice

“you aint no real Dot Mobb nigga, i know real Dot Mobb niggas / most of them don't even like Dot Mobb niggas” - Ice

“only crack u got need A&D ointment / u can have some A-Z choices and u still get a player 3 joystick” - Ice

Final Grade: B+

Needed 3 full rounds

My Winner: Can’t call it - too short

Tantrum vs A Class

Prediction: A-Class 2-1

Tantrum is very dope, but lately he just hasn’t been the same.  I was a little upset with this World Domination 4 performance and hoped he would do really good at home.  A-Class is very funny and technical, most of the time he delivers, so I had to edge him coming into this.

The first thing I want to note is that Timothy De La Ghetto (aka Traphik) and Dumbfoundead were all in the camera LOL - I felt like everyone was trying to recreate the vibe for Dumb vs Tantrum and get 1 million views all over again with another Korea vs China battle.  This is a hard one to judge on camera let me explain why: Tantrum tried to take away A-Class’ angles by saying that he plays off of being asian too much.  It worked, and I thought A-Class had no chance, but he had some lines that were just undeniable.  At the peak of this battle, Tantrum brought our a ninja mask and had the crowd going crazy.

Standout Lines

“u the reason dmx was always asking where my dogs at” - Class

he thinks the top asians are still everybody knows, dumbfoundead, tantrum, when everybody knows dumb founded tantrum” - Class

“you been rapping for 3 years and can't even get some clothing that fits / how your name tantrum and u cant even get anyone to throw you a fit” - Class

“ur such an awkward celibate faggot you even got friend zoned by your left hand” - Tantrum

“even if being a mirror match is potentially accurate, ill break your image down to every reflection and shatter it on some enter the dragon shit” - Tantrum

“compared to Koreans, chinese chicks got beyond a flat ass / them bitches are made without a trunk like a Honda hatchback” - Class

“your own boy was gunna commit suicide and you didn’t fuckin care / how is your best friend an Illusion when you’re the one who wasn’t there” - Class

“hit the homie Illmac and tell him ima need my Hattori Honzo blade back” - Tantrum

“this fool went to a black hairdresser and asked for the last airbender” - Class

“he thinks the city's confusing and the burbs have bad vibes / he even hates the hills - cause he heard they have eyes” - Class

Final Grade: B+

It was dope, but had some dry spots here and there

My Winner: Tantrum (bar for bar A-Class may have won two rounds, but looking at the battle as a whole, Tantrum’s angle was more impressive and effective)

DNA vs Pass

Prediction: Pass 2-1

This battle was an interesting matchup because both Pass and DNA have this issue where sometimes they will look like the best battlers on the face of the Earth and other times they just go good enough to get by.  This battle has been talked about for years, so we knew it would be fire.

The way Pass breaks down his opponents is lyrically amazing at times; he raps with conviction and the right amount of aggression.  DNA had some big lines, but he did a little too much play off of Pass’ name.  Pass attacked the battle from multiple angles while DNA only used a few and it hurt him in the end.

Standout Lines

“these young niggas will part your top so when u hear bang bang it ain’t a gay ass Don Demarco drop” - Pass

“theres a cancer in battle rap DNA’s selling it .. nah i said ur a part of a cancer in battle rap, you’re the DNA cell in it” - Pass

“there’s HIV in your DNA thats why ur first name’s Eric right? (Wright)” - Pass

“you can change your name pass, but these words (wurdz) goin still stick wit u” - DNA

“heyo Charlie ... that’s the way you talk to your son” - Pass

“you’re an avid diva, can’t spar wit the raps, got no part in the trap, my nigga your speech backwards” - Pass

“The Saurus average 300k, you don't get mentioned in the same breath as Illmaculate / Okwerdz get 10 times your views and he can’t even rap for shit” - DNA

“somebody should send some metal flying to DNA case blood ain't got no iron in him” - Pass

“we coulda battled in la but i knew he wasn't no comp then (Compton)” - DNA

Final Grade: A-

If DNA had a better third round it would have been a classic

My winner: Pass 2-1 (the second round was a tie)

Dizaster vs Aye Verb

My Prediction: None.  This battle was dependent on too many variables

There were a lot of classic Dizaster moments and Aye Verb had a very crazy angle in the third round.  Even though the battle was good, it may be time for Dizaster to switch it up a little bit and revamp his style.  Im not sick of it, because he still says crazy lines ... I just dont want to get sick of it in the near future.  His freestyle and rebuttal game are always on point, so its hard for Diz to give a bad performance, but he shouldn’t use his natural talents as a crutch.

In Aye Verb’s third round, he turned into a psychologist and explained why Dizaster acted that way.  Dizaster had a crazy rebuttal ... that round was classic.

Standout Lines

“when u rap people be like “awww fuck” u give niggas the same feel as when the condom break” - Verb

“this guy came up here looking like a LL Cool J fan / scratch that - he came up here lookin like the Kool-Aid man” - Diz

“you literally look like Kid and Play - get the fuck out of my face you black Nick Lachey” - Diz

“shot from Wichita ... Kansas / every shot i throw i pull a different card ... Gambit” - Verb

“deform your organ tissue and leave you on the corner of the table folded like a fuckin’ order menu” - Diz

“i really think you are from the hood just not protected / and you scared when you want protection - being scared brings out aggression” - Verb

“his last round was lame every other black guy I meet is Jamaal Barack Hussein / so if i can’t rap like this how about you guys give us back our names” - Diz

“un uncles are stock brokers, your uncles are broke stockers” - Diz

“im KRS you’re Jay-Z all you ever did was copy my blueprints” - Diz

Final Grade: A-

Dope main event, but it was lacking something ...

My Winner: Aye Verb 2-1

Cortez vs Caustic

My Prediction: Cortez 2-1

This battle reminds me a lot of Swave Sevah vs Fredo.  One person wins the first two rounds, and then BOOM the other guy has a monster 3rd.

Cortez won the first two rounds convincingly and he brought back the classic “there’s some shit we gotta speak about” only to tell Caustic that its stupid to talk about someone's girl in a battle.  It was done very well.  After getting boo’d in his second, Caustic bounced back by telling the crowd about some girl named Medusa that smash a bunch of rappers after World Domination 4 and said Cortez had problems getting it up.  I don’t know if it was true, but it was funny and definitely won the crowd over.

Standout Lines

“earning presents with disability (diss ability) cause i'm receiving full benefits” - Cortez

“I was supposed to battle Arcane, but he was scared”- Caustic

“supposed to believe this Cortez guy is a shooter / you dress like a homeless guy from the future” - Caustic (on Cortez’ outfit vs Dizaster)

“does Caustic’s nose know more than Caustic knows” - Cortez

“wit ur bitch i creep ... she swallows ... ate ours (hours) - thats a good night sleep” - Cortez

“who this rook bout to move upon (a pawn) .. he bout to take a L by (k)night ... sacrifice / your bitch up (bishop) on every move and her ass is nice” - Cortez

“u gettin top tier money, but u got def got (tycoon) taxed in Canada” - Caustic

“ur style is so ass Arsonal would eat that shit out for an hour and a half” - Caustic

“the barrel got more kick than Chun Li on a bonus stage” - Caustic

“thought u had me all mapped out but couldn't get a round” - Cortez

“even in the bible Daniel sacrificed a friend / still made profit and was well known for lying then” - Cortez

“what does it say about u as a man if a bitch named Medusa can’t get your dick hard” - Caustic

Final Grade: B

If the battle was earlier in the day, there would have been a lot of excitement in the room

My Winner: Cortez 2-1

Ness Lee vs RemyD

Prediction: Ness Lee 2-1

Remy messed up a few times, which basically killed the competitive edge the battle should have had, but ill sum this whole battle up with one quote:

“Just because you squeeze a lot of good words in your content don’t mean its complex we need some context/

I got schemes Chilla ain't even caught yet //

Like ill alternate and delete your projects /

Then reinstall the VST EXC to rewire and beat ya Logic but only because you cannot directly put Reason on it//” - Ness Lee

If you record music, then that was CRAZY

Standout Lines

“i'm nicer than verb’s first 12 bars against X-Factor and u wacker than the last 50” - Ness

“u think you’ll see a day with you being a chart climber? word to Georgia I don't know if you or Ray Charles blinder” - Remy

“you treated your crib like a napalm fighter/ so when i spit flames you’ll feel right at home cause i set the place on fire” - Remy

“you got an im currently dating Erykah Badu swag” - Ness

“he’ll dash fast as a track event / this man 4 runnin like a grand slam that a batter hit” - Remy

“its far more than bars, i brought rap back to battling” - Remy

Final Grade: B

If the battle was earlier and Remy didn’t mess up it would have been dope

My Winner: Ness Lee 3-0 (Remy’s third was dope though)

Charlie Clips vs Dirtbag Dan

My Prediction: Charlie Clips 3-0

Dirtbag Dan was his normal self for the majority of the battle, but he resorted to freestyling the last 40 seconds of his last two rounds.  Clips was good most of the battle, but had a freestyle that was a little hit/miss in his second.  One thing I can say is that these two are probably the most charismatic characters in battle rap and it really showed.  When Dan started rapping on some G shit it was actually dope - no joke i’d love to see him do a Proving Grounds battle with all gun bars.

Standout Lines

“damn homie ... in Grind Time you was the maaaaan homieeee” - Clips

“we both mexican cause im serving every kinda shell outta that one truck” - Clips

“if you rebuttal any of these fat jokes you are fat and they hurt you” - Dan

“if you looking for them bird bars i got the rifle wit the woodstock” - Dan (Charlie Brown scheme ending)

“knock the bitch out this nigga ... y’all won't get it until Dan yell (Danielle)” - Clips

“only 45 i seen Charlie clap is that gross ass percentage of body fat” - Dan

“ill have have Ms Brown in town coffin watching / long nose pointed at him like Caustic watchin” - Dan

“Dan is the wackest character in street fighter ... he’s gay, his punches are weak and his hadoken stops right here” - Clips

“Im a ludacris artist with these bingo flips / ill give ya eye twenty (I20) thats Ludacris artist wit a bingo chip” - Clips

“i should have refused to serve this faggot like Chik-Fil-A” - Dan

“i thought u were DNA’s social worker ... I ain’t even know you rapped” - Dan

Final Grade: B

Dan admitted he lost :-(

My Winner: Charlie Clips 3-0

FINAL THOUGHTS / AWARDS

Overall this was a dope event and it featured two classic battles that might break the top 100 of all time list.  In the future KOTD should make a few of the people with smaller names battle on another date and move some of the highly anticipated battles to day one.  Due to the crowd being tired, I would have loved to see Clips/Dan, Ness/Remy and Cortez/Caustic as the Day 1 main events.  Still a good job with some dope footage.  Thank you to KOTD for providing us with a PPV link.

Best Battle: Illmaculate vs Bigg K / Dan Myers vs Rum Nitty

Best Round: Illmaculate round 3 vs Bigg K / Caustic round 3 vs Cortez

Best Line: “there’s HIV in your DNA thats why ur first name’s Eric right?” - Pass

Best Performance: Chilla Jones

QOTR "DO OR DIE" EVENT RECAP

October 3, 2013, 2:45 am

Saturday September 28,2013 it all went down at Zab Judah's Boxing Gym in Brooklyn, East New York. Queen Of The Ring, The first all female battle league celebrated it's Third Year Anniversary with an amazing card titled Do Or Die consisting of the following match ups:

Lex Banko vs O'fficial

Young Gattas vs Chayna Ashley

Star Smilez vs Looney Divine

C3 vs Krissy Yammagucci

and 40 B.A.R.R.S vs Bonnie Godiva

When the card for the event was released, people were most excited about the long awaited and long over due debut of Young Gattas and her bout with Chayna Ashley. Another match up that was heavily anticipated and what most called a mirror match was the clash between 40 B.A.R.R.S and Bonnie Godiva.

I was expecting a larger crowd as I have witnessed at past QOTR events, but the smaller crowd made for more comfortable night.  Which is a good thing. One thing I can say about the QOTR crowd is that the men to women ratio is shocking as far as fan fare goes. The men at the venue, far outweighed  women.  Why? I don't know. Anyway, As I entered the gym, and maneuvered my way past some spectators, I came across Looney Divine who was standing at 5'5 in  5 inch heels swaying left and right focusing on the rounds she prepared for Star Smilez; who was ironically standing 5 feet away from her, accompanied by her beau T-Rex, O-Red and a crew of battlers.

Things kicked off with the first matchup of the night, Lex Banko vs O’fficial. I spoke to O'fficial outside of the venue prior to ithe battle and she told me that she was calling out some people.

When I asked who, she said " I'm calling out everybody, I don't care, names are getting named tonight!"

O'fficial vs Lex Banko

O'fficial vs. Banko was the first battle of the night.

O'fficial went first after the coin toss. The crowd was so anxious to see the battle that the room was still and silent at the top of the first. I'm glad they were because O'fficial had some fire! Throughout the battle she called out C.Ash, C3, E Heart, Ms Fit and Couture. Her performance was consistent and her punches were heavy hitting. She had nice schemes and set-ups and she meant business.

Quotable from O'fficial:

" This bitch fake watch how I make her face drop , this ain't the time  to pick shit up and screw it like a fake clock. When I roll Lex face off she'll hit the ground like Ace watch."

Lex Banko came out swinging like she usually does but her overall performance was not one of her best. She had some bars and she punched crazy. But later on in the battle; since this is a QOTR event, I'll say Earl's sister "Pearl" came to pay Lex a brief visit.  Before I continue, For those of you who are not familiar with " Earl" let me put you on.  “Earl" is a fictional character who was created after the Goodz vs Hitman battle. During the battle Hitman Holla had an infamous choke and Goodz being the jokester that he is said that Gerald (Hitman Holla) was mumbling to his imaginary friend Earl during his choke. Since then, when a battler has a clear choke and a lost for words "Earl" is the culprit.  Lex recovered from her conversation with "Pearl" and picked up her high energy she came out with.

Quotable from Lex Banko: "Ima OD on B and leave a dead rapper"

OH! let me not forget, Banko  pulled out a prop during the battle and the crowd was loving it!

The third round Lex energy began to dwindle and the crowd was becoming disinterested. She had some dry spots throughout the battle. Overall, The battle was a good back and forth,  punch filled and bar heavy battle. I'm glad to see Lex Banko back in the ring and I look forward to her being more active than she has been. If you ask me who took the win, I give it to O'fficial.  Her punches hit way harder and she was far more consistent.

Star Smilez vs Looney Divine

This was the battle following O'fficial and Banko.

After the coin toss Looney went first.

This was Looney's first QOTR appearance so I was anticipating the crowd to be completely biased against her.  There were some hecklers in the beginning but once Looney started to spit, to my surprise the crowd was rocking with her. Of course all I hear is how good Looney looks. Despite the allure of her looks, her fast paced flow had people paying close attention to what she had to say. Looney had a few jokes and mentioned that  Rex was one of many men who was admiring her. After Star spit in the first round the crowds attention and favor went towards Star. Some would say Star spazzed on Looney in the first.

But then, "Pearl" returned to Do Or Die to pay Looney a visit as well.  Star stumbled a bit in her round and I think "Pearl" had a convo with Star too. You would think a lot of heckling would have commenced when Looney started to trip over her words and stumble but people genuinely wanted to see Looney do her thing. There were a few bad remarks thrown around, but for the most part people in the crowd encouraging Looney. Unfortunately, her fast flow was too fast for her own good.

Quotable from Looney: " C3 beat you, how you expect to handle a C4?"

Although this battle was very disappointing Star Smilez had some bars. She came at Shooney, addressing the fact that Shooney slept with T-Rex and also had a few Looney name flips.

Quotable from Star: " Saying you can eat me you're Looney Divine, I'll have Rex do you... I'll Shooney Divine."

Star took the win but I expected more from both ladies.

C3 vs Krissy Yammagucci

Well... the battle did not go down. Debo came to ring to announce that Krissy had an emergency and couldn't make it. C3 came to the ring and responded to O'ffcial calling her out. She spit a few bars at O'fficial.

Quotable from C3: "I'll leave O'fficial stretched out and flatlined just like her shirt."

It's been said the date for C3 and O'fficial to go down will be in December,  I'm looking forward to it.

Young Gattas and Chayna Ashley

This was, no doubt, one of the most anticipated moments in QOTR. C. Ash vs Gattas.  Gattas brought her energy when she stepped into the ring and the crowd was hyped.  C.Ash went first after the coin toss.  Chayna’s presence immediately commanded the crowd.  She was completely in control and didn't stumble.  She returned to the essence of she flowed when she began her career in Queen of the Ring.

Quotable from Chayna Ashley: "It's like I'm posing for portraits the way I keep steel."

When Gattas went next, some people in the crowd were biased in the beginning.  When I looked around the ring I saw some people with screwed and turned up lips and side eyes, but there were also some onlookers who gazed with anticipation and excitement.  When Gattas started to spit though, all that bias went out the window.  This battle was a CLASSIC, a term that I rarely use.  The bout will have heavy replay value.  I won’t quote all of the lines verbatim because you have to see this when it drops.  Gattas’s Olympic setup, and her C.Ash impression were fire! Gattas came with her witty wordplay, humor and aggression.

Quotable from Gattas: "The E Hart attack caused you to die."

This was the best battle of the night.

C Ash Mayweather line, QOTR scheme, and bullets coming with address lines was dope too. There’s so many quotables and memorable parts in this battle from both ladies its crazy.  Chayna Ashley called out O-Red and bought out a prop of a mannequin head.  She did an Imah X impression that was dope. I honestly have it going either way solely because its like they wrote so perfect for each other it flowed so well.  All I heard throughout the battle was how pretty Gattas is and how is that her real hair and how C.Ash is in her bag and so on.  Gattas interactions with fans in between rounds was impressive and commendable.  There were some die hard Gattas fans next to me mad loud annoying me though.  Real talk LOL.  I can't wait till the footage drops. Right now if I had to pick a winner though, I have C.Ash edging it.  I really want to view this battle on camera because it was really that close.  It wasn't a clean sweep or body bag on either part. That's the best I have seen C. Ash and my first time seeing Gattas live. Classic and a great match up that built the momentum and crowds excitement for the next battle on the card which was the main event.

40 B.A.R.R.S vs Bonnie Godiva

I honestly called this battle "The meeting of the minds." Most people have been comparing 40 and Bonnie since they started their careers in the QOTR league. They both have similarities so I anticipated a classic.

When 40 and Bonnie came to the ring I was shocked by the appearance of both women, solely because Bonnie wasn't dolled up and 40 was. I think they both had an angle to their appearance.   Bonnie wanted people to focus on her bars and not looks 40 wanted to get dolled up because Bonnie being dubbed eye candy by the fans.

Well 40 started the battle off after the coin toss and as the battle ensued, 40 took shots at Nuborn who is rumored to write for Bonnie. She had a Jennifer Hudson line, a Cash Money scheme, an Aladdin Bar based off her calling out Bonnie's real name, Jasmine. She also said that Bonnie looked up to her.

Quotable from 40 B.a.r.r.s:  " We sound similar but we're different bruh, we homonyms."

Bonnie came with some heat, bringing up 40's parenting skills, freestyling and taking shots at John John. She also had a dope Jackson 5 line.

Quotable from Bonnie: "You mad because Tori Doe had that baby longer than you can keep a man."

There was a lot of foolery in this battle with the crowd talking throughout Bonnie's rounds, I think mainly because they were disappointed in her appearance.  I say this because the moment Bonnie got in the ring people were like " Why Bonnie not dressed up?"

The crowd lost interest here and there when Bonnie was spitting because she did have some dry spots. But her good points far outweighed the dry spots, so I don't understand why the crowd seemed to be so unforgiving.( Side Bar) I was standing  next to O Red during the battle and it was hot so being a gentleman he shared his makeshift fan he used from a flyer. A Ramadan line was mentioned in the battle; I side eyed O Red . Jokingly he took his fan back lol. S/O to ORed  for being petty Lol! (watch Hitman vs Phara  to understand why he did). Needless to say ,despite the crowd Bonnie had some hay-makers and went Ham in the third. This was an overall good battle but I have 40 taking it . Bonnie did not go down without a fight. This is another battle I anticipate seeing on camera.

I must say, nthis is the best QOTR event I have attended in a while. The card was very well put together and the match ups were well thought out. The crowd was the usual QOTR crowd. There were some classic lines, funny moments, and call outs that will make for some dope battles in the near future.  After the event I spoke to a few ladies.  Looney said she had a great time and she liked the crowd. C.Ash said her and Gattas put on a classic and said Gattas better come back to the ring.  40 said she was taken back by Bonnie's appearance.  She really thought Bonnie was going to come on some dolled up sh*t.  O'fficial said she's gunning for all the chicks who are bar heavy and C3 is the main one she's aiming at right now especially after she came to the ring and spit some bars towards her after her battle.

Aside from the cancellation of the Krissy and C3 battle and the crowd speaking through rounds when they became bored, it was a dope event. The spot was just right for my liking and not over crowded. The fans had access to battlers and was able to take pics with no problem. There was food if you were hungry, drinks if you were thirsty and the battles flowed without long intermissions or time in between. There were rest spots at two separate rings and ringside if your legs got weary lol.

Overall thumbs up QOTR.  Shout outs to Vague, Babs, Debo and everyone who showed me love from fans to battlers - male and female alike.  I'm looking forward to see what QOTR has cooking up for November 2nd.  I was told to save that date because it's going down.  I don't see that card topping this one, but we shall see.
